NEWS COVERAGE

Robertsdale, Alabama, is considered the hub of Baldwin County, with quick, easy access to Alabama’s Gulf Shores, as well as the ports of Mobile, Alabama, and Pensacola, Florida. Robertsdale Elementary is a Title I school that had failed to make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for two years. During the 2012-2013 school year Robertsdale Elementary’s 5th and 6th grade teachers were given mobile carts with two sets of 30 MacBooks to share between their classes.

OUR HERO'S STORY

“As our grade level chairperson, Ms. Buettner would incorporate CompassLearning Odyssey® Math lessons into our shared lesson plans,” explains nominator and teacher Jennifer Earp. “Two of the teachers were new to the grade level last year, while the other two had not taught math in several years. Because Ms. Buettner gave the team the correct Compass Learning tools to use with each course of study, along with the fact that we had access to the MacBooks as needed, we teachers felt more confident in teaching 6th grade math and all of our students were successful. Ms. Buettner also helped by working closely with struggling students and would lend support managing and viewing the CompassLearning Odyssey reports.”

This team of teachers was very concerned about the new college and career ready standards, new math textbooks, and new grade level material – all heaped on the existing learning challenges this group of students already faced. Because of these barriers, teachers were happily surprised when the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test (ARMT) results came back at the end of the school year with not a single student in their math classes scoring a Level 1 (“Does not meet standards”).

FACTORS TO SUCCESS

“The critical factor that led to our success was Ms. Buettner’s willingness to make learning easy and fun,” says Earp. “The students loved the MacBooks and loved working on the CompassLearning Odyssey lessons. As the grade level chair, Ms. Buettner sat down each Thursday with the teaching team to go over how the next week would look and the lessons we would be working on. Also our Compass Learning representatives did a lot of the work for us by evaluating and providing us with immediate feedback to determine which students needed additional support.”
